Ssangyong gets handsome with LIV-1 large SUV concept

Ssangyong has rolled another SUV out of the concept room and into the Seoul Motor Show called the LIV-1 – which stands for Limitless Interface Vehicle. The large four-wheel-drive machine is going into production according to Ssyangyong's CEO and will slot in between the Rodius and Rexton.

It will surely be toned down from the substantial, and substantially creased, SUV previewed in South Korea with its greenhouse full of glass and slivers for pillars. The "interface" portion of its name is backed up by five displays that include a 10-inch monitor in the center console, two seven-inch monitors in the headrests and a digital dash cluster with Special Sense that allows the driver to arrange the gauges as he sees fit.

Other tech touches include the nano-tube glassware that can remove frost quickly and the fact that the LIV-1 can be controlled remotely by a smart device and can "provide entertainment both within and from outside the vehicle," also via remote.

VW putting XL1 plug-in hybrid car into production

Volkswagen  XL1 plug-in hybrid

Volkswagen said it will build the XL1 plug-in hybrid, which the automaker says will be the most fuel-efficient production car in the world. The two-seater uses a diesel hybrid powertrain, an aerodynamically shaped body and lightweight materials to limit fuel consumption to 0.9 liters of diesel per 100 km (270 U.S. mpg, 313 UK mpg)). It has CO2 emissions of 21 grams per km.The car will debut at the Geneva auto show on March 5.

Aerodynamically shaped body

The production XL1 closely resembles the concept VW unveiled in early 2011. The aerodynamically shaped body includes fully covered rear wheels and rearview mirrors integrated into the door skin. The XL1 makes extensive use of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic for the body panels and aluminum for the frame structures. VW says the car has a curb weight of 795 kg (1,753 pounds).

Diesel hybrid powertrain
The plug-in hybrid powertrain combines an 800-cc, two-cylinder diesel engine, rated at 47 hp, with an electric motor rated at 27 hp. Power flows through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The XL1 has a lithium-ion battery pack under the hood. The car can travel up to 50 km (31 miles) on electric power. VW says the XL1 needs just 8.3 hp to cruise steadily at 100kph (62 mph). It has a top speed of 160kph (99mph).

Piech's one-liter car

The XL1 is the culmination of VW Chairman Ferdinand Piech's aim to build for everyday use a "one liter" car, so called because it uses one liter of fuel per 100km. VW said the XL1 delivers more everyday utility than two previous prototypes created in 2002 and in 2009.

VW has certified the XL1 for sale in Europe and has not said whether it will sell the vehicle in other markets such as the United States.VW will put the XL1 into production later this year but has not disclosed a price. It can produce up to 1,000 units a year. The XL1 will be hand-built at VW's plant in Osnabrueck, Germany, which also produces the Porsche Boxster and VW Golf convertible.

Nissan adds 2013 Titan to gearshift recall

Nissan has added the 2013 Titan to the list of vehicles recalled over potential gearshift issues. Just a few days ago, the automaker recalled nearly 20,000 NV Vans for a problem with the shift lever assembly that could cause the gear selector to read inaccurately.

Now Nissan is recalling certain 2013 Titan pickup trucks manufactured between December 17, 2012 and February 20, 2013 and equipped with column-mounted shift levers, though for a different fault. The pickups were built using certain chemicals that could cause the brake-shift interlock mechanism to fail over time. If that happens, the truck could be shifted out of Park without the driver's foot on the brake.

As a result, the truck could roll away and cause an accident or injury. Nissan says it will remedy the fault free of charge. Owners can expect to be notified once the campaign begins on or around April 8.

2014 Toyota Corolla to bow before LA

We've sort of been wondering when Toyota would finally debut the next-generation Corolla sedan, especially since the current car is getting very, very long in the tooth. We got a glimpse of the new compact's design at this year's Detroit Auto Show in the form of the Furia concept seen above, but we figured we'd see the production car by now.

According to Edmunds, Toyota will be unveiling the new Corolla sometime soon, and it won't wait until the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. Officials from the Japanese automaker did not state a specific location or date for the new car's unveiling, but said that the 2014 Corolla is expected to be on sale before the LA expo later this year and that it will be revealed "somewhere in the US."

Toyota did not divulge any details about the new Corolla, and we're willing to bet that the aggressive lines of the Furia concept will be dulled down quite a bit for the production model. Still, news that the new car is coming sooner rather than later is indeed a good thing.

GM to produce next-generation electric car in South Korea

SEOUL (Reuters) -- General Motors Co. plans to produce its next-generation electric cars in South Korea, the head of its South Korean unit told Reuters on Thursday, as the U.S. carmaker tries to revive momentum for the stalling vehicle technology.

Sergio Rocha, CEO of GM Korea, gave no time frame for the launch of the new vehicles, but said they would be slightly bigger than the Spark small car and use a thoroughly new design, unlike the Spark EV which was based on an existing gasoline engine model.

GM will continue working with South Korea's LG Chem Ltd. to supply batteries for its second generation of electric vehicles, which will be produced at GM's plant in Bupyeong, near Seoul, he added.

"This (next-generation electric) car has a lot of similarities with the products we produce today in Bupyeong," Rocha said in the interview, on the sidelines of the Seoul auto show.

GM Korea, which makes more than 40 percent of GM's Chevrolet-branded vehicles and specializes in developing small cars for the U.S. company, produces the Aveo, Trax, Captiva and Malibu at its Bupyeong plant.

Electric vehicles such as GM's Volt and Nissan Motor Co.'s Leaf are struggling to gain traction, hobbled by limited driving range, a lack of charging infrastructure and high prices.

GM CEO Dan Akerson said early this month that the U.S. automaker was developing new EVs, including one with a 100-mile range and another with a 200-mile range.

GM Korea started production of its current generation of Spark EVs in Korea this month for export to the U.S. market and plans to begin selling it in South Korea and Europe in the second half of the year.

LG Chem makes the lithium-ion batteries for GM's electric vehicles, which are produced in Korea and the United States.

Mitsubishi prices 2014 Outlander from $22,995*

Mitsubishi will gladly sell you a 2014 Outlander ES for $22,995, excluding an $835 destination fee. Buyers can step up to the middle-tier Outlander SE for $23,795, or around $200 less than last year. That stack of cash will net you 18-inch aluminum wheels, a 6.1-inch LCD information display, dual-zone climate control and other goodies. Somewhat more impressively, Mitsubishi has cut the price tag for the Outlander GT by $800. That machine will run you $27,795, and throws in a more potent V6 engine, the company's Super All-Wheel Control system and HID headlamps.

The 2014 Outlander bows with an all-new exterior design, and base models receive a 166-horsepowr 2.4-liter four-cylinder paired with a continuously variable transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. That driveline is good for 24 miles per gallon city and 29 mpg highway.

Top Five 2013 New York Auto Show Debuts

We hope you appreciate the time, thought and care that goes into an Editors' Choice list like this. If you think the debate that will follow in Comments is contentious, you should see us arguing over the merits of each car. We take these picks anything but lightly, as we know you do the results.

Our Editors' Choice picks for the 2013 New York Auto Show were voted on this time around by the entire team of Autoblog editors, and we used a points-based scoring system instead of voting for a single favorite vehicle. Each editor was given 25 points to assign to their five favorite vehicles. The points could be distributed among the chosen five any which way, with a limit of 10 points for any one car and all 25 points having to be assigned.

There was no criteria to guide our choices other than picking our favorite vehicles that debuted at the show – not significance, not technology, nuttin'. So without further delay, we present to you our 2013 NY Editors' Choice list. Now go forth, and tell us why we're right or wrong in Comments.

#5: 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S Wagon

Consider this one the Auto Journo Special. It's no secret that scribes in this industry have a penchant for wagons, and we're no exception. If you're Mercedes and you stuff a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 into that wagon, you've got our vote. If you then make an even more hardcore S model, increasing output by 27 horsepower and 59 pound-feet to 577 hp and 590 lb-ft, you've got us *this close* to pooling our money and drafting a joint custody schedule. The E63 AMG S Wagon is really everything we could ask for in a real-world vehicle (except fuel economy, but you can't have everything), and so it sneaks on our list in the last spot.

#4: 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG

The CLA is the first in a new class of very small, entry-level German luxury sedans, and it's set the bar high with the introduction of its highest-performing model, the CLA45 AMG. The fact that its engine produces 355 horsepower and 322 pound-feet of torque may not surprise you (AMG models, after all, are gratuitously powerful). The fact that all this power comes from a four-cylinder engine just 2.0-liters large should shock you to your core, though. Mercedes claims it's the most powerful production four-cylinder in the world, and with 178 horsepower per liter, and aside from some small-volume Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution models overseas that barely qualify as "production," we can't think any other car with that kind of power density.

#3: Subaru WRX Concept

With the possible exception of Honda's new vacuum cleaner, nothing generated more buzz out of New York this year than this conceptual look at the next generation of Subaru WRX. The automaker captured lightning in a bottle with the new design, drawing praise from pundits and the public for the muscular shape and low-slung silhouette. After growing up with ugly-yet-loveable Subies in the main, something as performance-oriented and striking as this WRX Concept is almost unbelievable. We're hoping (as are you, judging by the weight of your commentary) that Subaru keeps a lot of this intact when it comes time to put together the real-deal next-gen WRX. Fingers crossed.

#2: 2014 Cadillac CTS

With plenty of momentum from ATS and XTS coming into this year, Cadillac may be hitting its stride with the introduction of the third-generation CTS here in New York. With styling that is equal parts edgy and elegant, and an impressive new turbocharged V6 engine option, America's luxury brand seems poised to take its best shot in years at the hegemony of the German premium marques. If buyers can get behind Caddy's suite of underhood and in-car technologies, we think the CTS could be a major hit.

#1: 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28

Winner winner, chicken dinner. At a surprisingly performance-oriented show this year, the return of the Z/28nameplate to the Camaro lineup was arguably the highest-profile story out there. If the new Chevy featured a badge and a meaner face alone, we wouldn't have cared half so much. But with the Z/28 pounding out at least 500 horsepower, while shedding some 300 pounds, our inclination is to believe that this Camaro will be special. With blood-rival Mustang Boss 302 getting loads of praise and special racing editions over the last year, Chevy seems to have counterpunched with a haymaker here. The new golden age for American muscle continues – enjoy it while it's here.

Audi rumored to buy Alfa Romeo, officials deny it

For more than two years, Volkswagen has been making public statements about its willingness to buy Alfa Romeo and quadruple the Italian brand's sales, and for just as long, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne has replied with some version of "Mr. Piëch, drop it." According to a report in Ward's Auto, all that jousting might be over: it claims that sources close to both Marchionne and Audi CEO Rupert Stadler admit that the two are in talks for Audi to buy not just Alfa Romeo, but a production plant in Italy. In fact, a final deal could possibly include partsmaker Magnetti Marelli.

Against that backdrop, a report by German news weekly Stern quotes a Fiat spokesmen as saying it doesn't comment on rumors and an Audi rep has said flatly that "There is no substance in the news." If a sale is being arranged, the timing would seem to point to how eager Fiat is to raise cash to complete its major initiatives. Even though Alfa Romeo continues to delay its return to the US, it just showed off the production version of the 4C at the Geneva Motor Show (shown above) and said that preferred Fiat dealerships here would get them. Then there's Alfa's recently concluded deal with Mazda to develop a roadster based on the next generation MX-5 Miata – a deal that would seem to help both the Italian and Japanese brands.

The monetary issues are troublesome, though. Fiat is taking a beating in the European market and its weak-kneed balance sheet is delaying gotta-have-it products like the Jeep Cherokee. Fiat has been talking to banks about getting money to buy the rest of Chrysler and those financial institutions have also raised issues about debt and cash reserves, and the nasty game of chess Fiat is playing with the United Auto Workers (and now the court system about the portion of Chrysler it doesn't own) could end up blowing another hole in Marchionne's plans. It is possible that this could finally have convinced Fiat to at least see how serious Audi's parent company, Volkswagen, is about buying Alfa Romeo. Or it could be just another rumor.

Beyond Alfa Romeo, the report says the deal being discussed would include the rather modern Pomigliano d'Arco plant built just for the production of Alfa Romeos. Audi's interest in Magnetti Marelli is claimed to be because the German brand wants a components maker and it would also like to establish an R&D center in Italy, where its holdings already include Lamborghini, Ducati and the styling house Italdesign-Guigiaro.

2014 Toyota Highlander greets the world with NYC debut

.

Toyota has pulled the wraps off its all-new, 2014 Highlander in New York this morning, giving Americans a first look at what is sure to be a heavyweight in the mid-size crossover segment.

The new third-generation Highlander will come with the buyer's choice of three different powertrain options. The base model will be powered by a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission with front-wheel-drive. Next up the ladder is a 3.5-liter V6, also mated to the 6AT, which can be had with either front-or all-wheel-drive. Finally, the Highlander Hybrid will be equipped with all-wheel drive, its 3.5-liter V6 mated to an electric motor, all hooked up to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The automaker has not released any specs for fuel economy or output yet, though we're promised increases in both power and efficiency.

While not a revolution in terms of styling, Toyota has cleaned up the bodywork for the new model, offering a crisp, conservative look for the slightly larger Highlander. The vehicle is some three inches longer and an inch-and-a-half wider than the outgoing model, yet it has a lower roofline. Black plastic-clad wheel arches make an attempt to butch up the crossover, though to our eyes, the Highlander still has the look of a minivan around the rear view.

Inside, the most important feature of this model is that it seats eight humans. Beyond that, the automaker is crowing about contrast stitching on the seating surfaces, soft-touch materials on the instrument panel and accents in wood grain, silver satin and chrome. The third row is now easier to access via a sliding second-row point of entry, and is more capacious thanks to 4.3-inches of added width. There's also a raft of newly safety tech including lane-departure warning, pre-collision warning and blind spot monitoring systems.

Toyota tells us that this Highlander will reach dealers sometime in the first part of 2014, though pricing has not been finalized. Scroll down to read more granular info about the 2014 Toyota Highlander in the official press release, and don't miss our galleries of both stock and live images of the CUV.

Mercedes 300SL Gullwing wrecked by mechanic

This one isn't going to be for the faint of heart. A mechanic recently destroyed a Mercedes-Benz 300SLduring a test drive near Pleidelsheim in Baden-Wütterburg, Germany. The owner brought the car to Mechatronics, a shop specializing in high-end and vintage Mercedes-Benz vehicles, for some work. After the job was done, a 26-year-old technician hopped behind the wheel and brought a 19-year-old apprentice with him for the ride. As you can see, the car did come back in one piece, but that piece didn't quite look like it used to. Police say – surprise! – speed was a factor when the vintage Gullwing left the road and rolled. Neither the driver nor the passenger were seriously injured.

All told, the damage is estimated 650,000 euros, or $830,000 at current conversion rates. Both the car and the garage are sufficiently insured to cover the damages, and Spiegel Online says the owner took the news about his destroyed classic in stride. At this point, it's unclear whether their driver will pay to have this particular car repaired.

Subaru WRX Concept hints at big performance, offers few facts

Subaru has dropped the curtain on its truly attractive WRX Concept and, as previewed a few days ago, we're fast fans of the wide, low, muscular sedan. The concept car looks great, but there was a distinct lack of information being offered about the next-generationWRX that is sure to follow this concept – we're looking at a design statement only at this point.

Still, Subaru's press release does offer some more detail about both the concept and the car to come. You'll be hard pressed not to notice that the car's roof has been constructed entirely of carbon fiber, a move that designers have used to lower the center of gravity and reduce weight. Get past the gaping hood scoop and you'll also notice that that the concept car has a rather prominent power bulge sticking out of its hood, better to accommodate a "new turbocharged engine and intercooler."

In front, the massive hexagonal grill provides a strong full forward view, and the lower fascia incorporates sculpted air intakes that are said to help the engine breathe as well as providing downforce. In back, the standard-issue wing has been replaced with a subtly curved trunklid spoiler. Quad tailpipes also hint at the big power we hope will be packed into the car, when it takes production form. (No word at all on when we might expect a production-ready car.)

Clearly, the WRX Concept is styled anticipation of an all-wheel-drive vehicle, with four blistered wheel arches making that layout obvious. Huge 20-inch BBS wheels (not gold, but we like them) are wearing 245-section Dunlop tires, and look ready to grip and rip. Follow on for the full Subaru press release, once you've finished feasting your eyes on our image galleries.

U.S. auto sales wrapping up a strong March

U.S. auto sales are finishing March on an upbeat note, with analysts expecting the industry to extend its strongest streak in five years.

Three independent forecasters predict a seasonally adjusted annual sales rate of 15.3 million, nearly matching February’s 15.36 million SAAR and up 8 percent from a year earlier on a unit basis. Kelley Blue Book is at the low end of forecasts, at 15.2 million. More positive are Barclays at 15.5 million and Edmunds.com at 15.6 million.

A performance at those levels would mark the fifth straight month above the 15 million rate. The last streak of that length ended in early 2008, as the economy veered into recession.

Automakers release March results on Tuesday, April 2.

“We will have a strong March” Ludwig Willisch, CEO of BMW of North America, said at the New York auto show this week. “For the rest of the year, we are looking at constant growth.”

BMW sales cooled in the first two months of the year, rising 1 percent after a December surge. The German automaker’s results trailed the industry’s 8 percent gain.

Early Easter

Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Steve Cannon isn’t sure if ending the month with an earlier-than-usual Easter will affect retail sales, but said “it will be a record March” anyhow.

But Mike Hoornaert, general manager at Fox Automotive in Rochester Hills, Mich., said “it looks like it is going to be a strong close.”

Hoornaert said customers at his Chevrolet, Toyota and Volkswagen stores are no longer reacting much to politics. But they do respond to incentives. “It all depends on the incentives,” he said.

Robert Davis, senior vice president of Mazda’s U.S. operations group, said incentives remain at reasonable levels, but big players in highly competitive segments can raise the ante for everybody. He said American Honda spent big on outgoing Civic models in the fourth quarter and now has a smaller incentive on the new-generation Civic.

“Everybody had to react to that,” Davis said in New York. “They’re so dominant in that segment that when they make a move everybody else makes a move with it.”

General Motors expects to finish the first quarter with an increase in market share for retail and fleet, Alan Batey, interim marketing chief and head of U.S. sales, said at the New York show.

“The first quarter has been on the high end of our expectations,” he said. “We’re a little bit above where we thought we’d be.”

He added: “March looks really strong.”

Expectations also are rising for the full year on improving U.S. economic indicators.

The Dow Jones 30 Industrials and Standard & Poor’s 500 indexes set record highs this month. IHS Global Insight economist Nigel Gault expects gains next week in monthly reports on manufacturing, jobs and payroll wages.

This week, Barclays analyst Brian Johnson raised his total 2013 U.S. sales forecast a notch to 15.5 million – 1 million more than last year’s total and 5 million more than the 10.4 million sold during the industry collapse of 2009.

Ignoring politics

Jeff Schuster, the top forecaster for LMC Automotive, said car buyers are ignoring political deadlock.

“Consumers do not appear fazed by headwinds from Washington,” Schuster said. referring to the battles in Washington over the fiscal cliff and the sequester spending cuts. “Auto sales are outperforming earlier expectations.”

Mercedes’ Cannon said: “We are thrilled about the start of the year and confident with the economy, feeling like it is gaining traction.”

General Manager Rick Jones of Mike Shaw Toyota in Corpus Christi, Texas, said he’s “bullish” on April.

“With increased credit availability, Toyota incentives being strong and the redesigned RAV4, I think April will be like March,” he said. “It’s going to be a barn burner.”

Next-gen Mini interior ditching familiar center speedo

A Reddit user has posted images of the 2015 F56 Mini Cooper, one each of the exterior and interior. As has been the case since the launch of the new Mini in 2001, the overall exterior shape underneath camouflage screams Mini, but insiders are still calling the coming F56 model "the most aggressively different new Mini yet." Inside, though, the two-door that defined premium hatchbacks has, according to its most devoted buyers, gone mainstream.

The giant ring atop the center console is there, but there's no longer a speedometer inside of it. Instead, in an integration that brings to mind words like "shoehorned," Mini designers have placed radio and telephone controls inside the bezel. According to the Mini experts at MotoringFile, the picture above is the base trimand one of four possible treatments – in the upper trims a larger screen for navigation takes up most of the space. The bezel itself is marked with mood lighting that supposedly "swirls around" when you start the car with the red toggle switch.

The speedo rests atop the steering column with a tachometer placed to its left. The BMW wheel pictured is just for the prototype – you can expect a familiar three-spoke Mini wheel when the car is revealed, and latest rumor is that the event will take place at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show.

2014 SRT Viper TA attacks Manhattan

As if the 2013 SRT Viper GTS hasn't stirred up enough excitement, SRT has created a more specialized version of the car designed to attack any track. On display at the New York Auto Show, the 2014 Viper TAhas been enhanced for even better track duty, but production will be limited to just 33 units when it goes on sale later this year.

Obvious changes to SRT's flagship performance car include upgraded Brembo brakes, a carbon fiber x-brace under the hood and carbon fiber front and rear spoilers – the latter aero changes providing about 300 pounds of additional downforce at speed. Oh, and if you didn't notice, the car will only be offered in this eye-blazing Crusher Orange paint job with black, lightweight wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires. The black-only interior gets similar contrasting orange stitching all over to bring some color indoors.

Less obvious changes include a revised two-mode Bilstein suspension that is firmer than the standard Viper GTS to begin with, and has a "smaller spread between the modes," suggesting that even though the car is road-legal, it's likely to be a pretty extreme ride. Asis the case with "lesser" Vipers, the TA relies on the 8.4-liter V10 to churn out 640 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. Scroll down to watch video of how the TA came to be and to read the official press release.

Kia compact coupe, hatchback go turbo

NEW YORK -- Most compact cars are engineered to be a means of affordable transportation for the masses, often sacrificing fun for practicality.

With its redesigned Forte lineup, Kia seems to be doing the opposite. The Forte will be the industry's only compact car lineup that offers sporty versions with turbocharged engines in two body styles -- a coupe and a hot hatch. A 201-hp, 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder from Hyundai-Kia's engine stable will power both the Forte Koup and the Forte five-door hatchback in highline SX trim.

Kia revealed the Koup today at the New York auto show, prior to its fourth quarter U.S. sales debut. The turbocharged Forte SX hatchback, revealed at the Chicago auto show, arrives in the third quarter.

The new models could draw boy-racer types looking for cheap speed to a Kia showroom for the first time. Of course, the Forte lineup includes more basic versions with naturally aspirated engines for the more economically minded that likely will account for the bulk of Forte sales. After all, you've got to have volume to make a business case for the more expensive turbo variants.

Kia has long sought to establish its brand as a more youthful, sporty yin to the practical, grownup yang of Hyundai.

Trouble is, those efforts have been somewhat undermined by Hyundai being first in line to get the Hyundai-Kia group's first rear-wheel-drive sports coupe (Genesis Coupe) and hot hatch (Veloster Turbo.) That has left Kia with a lineup that, despite the compelling designs seen since Peter Schreyer's arrival as Kia design boss in 2006, has lacked the oomph to really back up its sporty aspirations.

The turbocharged Fortes should help move Kia in the right direction.

They should also resonate with younger buyers.

Research from consultant AutoPacific Inc. shows that small, turbocharged sporty cars are among those most favored by young car buyers. The high-performance Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Subaru WRX, for example, are the nameplates with the industry' youngest buyers, according to AutoPacific.

The median ownership age for each vehicle is 34, according to AutoPacific data.

Those are cars with serious performance bona fides that Kia's new Forte entries won't be able to touch.

But for a brand that wants to stand out as sporty and dynamic in the crowded mainstream field, Kia's decision to sell two turbo-fours in its compact car lineup could do more for the brand than only boosting sales.

2013 Porsche Cayman first drive

We're at Dubai to experience the all new 2013 Porsche Cayman. As before the Boxster looks very similar to the new one that was launched a few months back. The Cayman is essentially a Boxster with a fixed roof but this time around Porsche developed the Boxster and Cayman separately from the ground up. It's got a longer wheelbase and wider tracks both at front and rear. The wheels have been pushed further to the extremities and while the car has gotten a little larger it's also gotten lighter thanks to a new aluminium and steel construction. Two engines are on offer - a 2.7-litre flat six that makes 275PS and a 3.4-litre flat six good for 325PS in the Cayman S. We will only be getting the S in India so well focus on that. Power is up by 5PS from the old car but the car is more efficient thanks to improved heat management, the new electric steering and a start stop system.

The Cayman has always been about handling finesse thanks to the mid engine configuration, low mounted flat six and two seater layout. The new car, simply out is a revelation around a track. Turn ins are excellent, roll is almost nonexistent and the beautiful balance makes it feel like the car is pivoting into the corner around a centre point thanks to the mid engine layout. The front brakes are lifted off the base 911 and feel excellent while the dual clutch PDK gearbox continues to be one of the best in the business.

Porsche plans to launch the Cayman S in April and it should cost about Rs 84 lakh, Rs4 lakh more than the Boxster S.

In N.Y., cars consumers actually want to buy

The automotive sales climate is quite different on the different sides of the Atlantic Ocean -- and the auto shows in Europe and the United States show it.

The European auto market continues to crater, to put it bluntly. With the stream of unsettling financial news, European consumers seem reluctant to buy new vehicles, even if they can afford them.

Yet the recent Geneva auto show seemed like a willful exercise in reality denial. The cluster of cars with price tags in the six and seven figures (dollars or euros, take your pick) was stunning. The $3.9 million Lamborghini Veneno was merely the most extreme example in the parade of Ferraris, Rolls-Royces and the like.

Meanwhile, on this side of the pond, auto sales are climbing steadily. Most likely, U.S. light-vehicle sales this year will top 15 million units -- nothing like the 17 million totals in 2000 and 2001, but healthy.

So what do you see on the New York vehicle debut lineup? There’s a bit of glitter -- the Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG, for instance -- but nothing like Geneva.

High-end brands such as Cadillac, Infiniti and Land Rover are represented. But mostly there are a bunch of bread-and-butter vehicles: Acura MDX, Buick LaCrosse, Dodge Durango, Honda Odyssey, Jeep Cherokee and Toyota Highlander, to name a few.

Maybe it’s a fluke of product cadence. Or maybe the New York debuts focus more on cars regular folks buy because regular folks in this country are buying cars.

Mercedes-Benz rolls out B-class EV

NEW YORK -- Mercedes-Benz, marking its first U.S. foray into electrified vehicles, today introduced the five-seat, five-door B-class Electric Drive at the New York auto show.

The 2014 battery electric vehicle will go on sale in early 2014. The plug-in EV has a lithium ion battery stored under the floor to save space and a 134-hp electric motor that gives it a range of 115 miles.

The vehicle is based on Mercedes-Benz's new front-wheel-drive platform for compact cars. The B class is a five-door hatchback that is available with conventional power. The United States will get only the pure electric version. Pricing will be released later.

Mercedes-Benz also considered bringing the SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive -- priced at more than $500,000 -- to the United States, but there are no plans to do so now, a company official said today.

Mercedes-Benz said the B-class electric has a torque output of 228 pounds-feet -- nearly the same as a gasoline engine with a displacement of 3.0 liters. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 10 seconds. Speed is electronically limited to 100 mph.

Mercedes-Benz said the B-class electric can be recharged "at any standard domestic power outlet."

Kinetic energy during braking is converted into electricity and stored in the battery.

The B-class electric will be available with the optional Mercedes-Benz Comand multimedia system with Internet access, navigation and voice control. The driver will be able to digitally access information about the vehicle, such as the battery's charge status, via the Internet on a smartphone or computer. The navigation system will provide information on charging station locations along a route. The driver also will be able to remotely preheat or cool the car.

The United States will be the first market to get the B-class electric.

BMW, Audi prep more diesel models for U.S.

NEW YORK -- Volkswagen AG's Audi brand and BMW AG are expanding their diesel lineups in the United States as consumers are drawn by the performance and as a way to counter rising gasoline prices.

BMW is introducing diesel versions of its 3 Series and 5 Series this year, Ludwig Willisch, BMW's chief executive for North America, said in an interview at the New York auto show.

BMW plans to offer diesel engines in almost all its model lines in the next five years, he said.

Audi, which sells diesel versions of the A3 hatchback, A8 sedan and Q7 SUV, will introduce diesel variants of the A6 and A7 sedans and Q5 SUV for the 2014 model year, said Scott Keogh, the automaker's U.S. chief.

Makers of luxury vehicles, like other automakers, are under U.S. regulatory pressure to double their corporate average fuel economy, known as CAFE, to 54.5 miles (88 kilometers) per gallon by 2025.

"As luxury and non-luxury manufacturers struggle to reach mileage standards, diesel has emerged as one of the preferred technologies," said Alec Gutierrez, senior analyst from Kelley Blue Book. "Especially in luxury cars where customers don't want to sacrifice performance and hybrids haven't taken off."

'Convincing proposition'

BMW is expanding the lineup based on sales of the diesel version of its X5 SUV, currently the only model for which it offers a diesel engine, Willisch said.

Every fourth X5 sold in the United States is a diesel, and when gasoline prices spike, that can increase to every third, he said.

"It is a very convincing proposition and I don't know why it shouldn't work in the U.S.," Willisch said. "It's range, fuel economy, torque. That all is superior to a gas engine."

About half the A3 hatchbacks Audi sells in the United States and about 36 percent of the Q7 are diesels while take rates for the sedans should be closer to 15 percent, Keogh said.

"We see that as being very successful and that's why we're bringing more of them," Keogh said.

Diesels permit luxury buyers to obtain 25 percent to 30 percent better fuel efficiency while maintaining power and performance, said Rebecca Lindland, an automotive consultant with Rebel Three Media & Consultants in Cos Cob, Connecticut.

"There's only so much downsizing a luxury buyer is going to tolerate," Lindland said. "You want me to spend $40,000 on a three-cylinder engine when I can spend $40,000 on a diesel?"

2013 New York Auto Show – Jaguar XKR-S GT

Jaguar XKR-S is, in no way, a slow car. It’s a seriously fast, 550PS machine that will easily give any supercar a run for its money. But the bosses at Jaguar thought that it wasn’t enough and there lies the cue for the Jaguar XKR-S GT to make a grand entry. Jaguar has gone ahead and unveiled a more mental street legal version of an already potent car at the 2013 New York Auto Show and calls it the XKR-S GT. Only 30 of these cars will be manufactured, out of which 25 are reserved for the United States of America and the remaining five will go to Canada.

The supercharged V8 of the XKR-S remains unchanged and so are the power and the torque figures but instead, Jaguar has worked on tuning the other necessary bits that effectively transmit all that power and torque to the tarmac which essentially means that the XKR-S GT will be a hoot to drive on a racetrack. The new car features a hood with distinctively styled louvers to aid the engine cooling, Carbon fiber finds its way on the redesigned front air splitter, dive planes and extended wheel arch spats. It also gets a brand new rear diffuser, an aluminum front under tray and a huge massive wing on the back to enforce maximum down force.

That’s not all; Jaguar has also put in some extra hours working on the underpinnings of the vehicle. Unlike the XKR-S, retuned and height adjustable dampers are standard underneath and spring rates have also been increased at both front and rear by 68 per cent and 25 per cent respectively. Most of the suspension has been upgraded and the larger carbon ceramic brakes and wider 20-inch wheels wrapped in Pirelli Corsa tyres - 255/35-series rubber in front and 305/30-series at the back - are now standard. As if all this was not enough, faster steering rack has been added for improved agility and there's also a revised active exhaust system, which amplifies the already monstrous sound track coming out the back of the Jag.

The cost of all that British tech and mind numbing fun? Rs 94.69 lakh when it goes on sale in August.

2013 New York Auto Show – Range Rover Sport 2014

With a gala opening befitting a movie premiere (Daniel Craig unveiled it) for the all-new Range Rover Sport , expectations are sky high from the ongoing New York Auto Show. Sitting squat between the bigger Range Rover and the smaller Evoque, the Range Rover Sport still holds it’s own. The two-bar grille is flanked by LED daytime running lamps and side strakes. Land Rover says that this SUV is the most aerodynamic one from their stables with a drag coefficient of 0.34.

Use of aluminium has helped Range Rover shave off nearly 450kgs from the Sport’s heft. It even weighs in 50kg less than the Rangie. Like the bigger Range Rover, the Sport has a choice of 510PS 5.0-litre supercharged V8 and 3.0-litre 340PS supercharged V6 engines. Both the engines put power on the road through an 8-speed ZF transmission and a single speed Torsen diff.

Inside, the steering wheel is now a thick unit while premium soft-touch materials from the Range Rover make their presence felt. The front row passengers get more padding in the seats while the second row ones have individual seating arrangement. More of a party trick is the power-operated third row of seats.

The 2014 Range Rover Sport, as the model year suggests, is most likely to make it’s way to the Indian shores next year.

2013 New York Auto Show – Audi S3

It has been long since Audi unveiled a small sporty sedan that is small on size but big on performance. All that, and more has been changed with the arrival of the new Audi S3 sedanwhich was showcased along with the A3 sedan at the New York Auto Show. The S3 sedan is all set to get launched in Western Europe in December this year after the A3 sedan in September.

The S3 sedan boasts of a powerful 2.0L TFSI engine that produces a hearty 300PS of power and 380Nm of torque. The S3 sedan comes equipped with a Quattro all wheel drive and a six speed S-tronic transmission which shoves it from zero to 100kmph in 4.7 seconds. Adding up these power figures with the compactness of the S3 sedan means truck loads of fun, on both the road and the race track. The only thing that the S3 sedan shares with the S3 sportback is the chassis as all the other exterior panels are different from the hatchback so as to increase the track width to broaden the stance of the sedan. The car also comes with optional 19 inch wheels while the S-line sport chassis lowers the car by an inch on stiffer springs, bringing out a leaner, sportier stance.

2013 New York Auto Show – Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG 2014

Mercedes’ uber-cool and sexy CLA45 AMG debuted at the 2013 New York Auto Show. Powered by what Mercedes calls “the most powerful 4-cylinder turbocharged unit”, the CLA45 AMG brings to the table 355PS of power and 450Nm of torque. A seven-speed dual clutch transmission is mated to this engine and transfers power to all the four wheels through a 4MATIC drive system. Mercedes claims that the CLA45 AMG will hit the 0-100kmph in 4.7 seconds and will have an electronically limited top speed of 250kmph.

While we always thought that the CLA is drool worthy, the CLA45 AMG takes it to a new tangent with that AMG laced face and big wheels. While it may look aesthetic, it also makes the car a wee bit aerodynamic and aids it's handling. The stock suspension makes way for the stiffer bearings, new four-link rear axle and stiffer steering bits.

The CLA45 AMG will go on sale in 2-3 months with an asking price of Rs 25.80 lakh in North America.
